Catch Pattern for Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) of Different Commercial Trawls in Similar Times and Overlapping Fishing Grounds
Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is harvested using different design midwater trawls. Knowing the selective properties between trawls is crucial information for the management of the krill resources. This study compared the catch patterns between different commercial krill trawls at similar times and overlapping fishing grounds based on scientific data collected by scientific observers onboard commercial trawlers Long Teng (LT) and Fu Rong Hai (FRH). The results showed significant differences in the length-dependent catch densities and cumulative catch densities of krill between the two trawls. The krill length range in catches from LT's trawl was wider than that of FRH's trawl. Furthermore, the catch would consist of a larger proportion of smaller krill in the LT's trawl. The LT's trawl caught significantly higher proportions of krill below 38 mm than FRH's trawl. Even, the LT's trawl caught substantial numbers of kril

SPHR-SAR-Net: Superpixel High-resolution SAR Imaging Network Based on Nonlocal Total Variation
High-resolution is a key trend in the development of synthetic aperture radar
(SAR), which enables the capture of fine details and accurate representation of
backscattering properties. However, traditional high-resolution SAR imaging
algorithms face several challenges. Firstly, these algorithms tend to focus on
local information, neglecting non-local information between different pixel
patches. Secondly, speckle is more pronounced and difficult to filter out in
high-resolution SAR images. Thirdly, the process of high-resolution SAR imaging
generally involves high time and computational complexity, making real-time
imaging difficult to achieve. To address these issues, we propose a Superpixel
High-Resolution SAR Imaging Network (SPHR-SAR-Net) for rapid despeckling in
high-resolution SAR mode. Based on the concept of superpixel techniques, we
initially combine non-convex and non-local total variation as compound
regularization. This approach more effectively despeckles and manages the
relationship between pixels while reducing bias effects caused by convex
constraints. Subsequently, we solve the compound regularization model using the
Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm and unfold it into
a Deep Unfolded Network (DUN). The network's parameters are adaptively learned
in a data-driven manner, and the learned network significantly increases
imaging speed. Additionally, the Deep Unfolded Network is compatible with
high-resolution imaging modes such as spotlight, staring spotlight, and sliding
spotlight. In this paper, we demonstrate the superiority of SPHR-SAR-Net
through experiments in both simulated and real SAR scenarios. The results
indicate that SPHR-SAR-Net can rapidly perform high-resolution SAR imaging from
raw echo data, producing accurate imaging results
Genetic variants of p27 and p21 as predictors for risk of second primary malignancy in patients with index squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cell cycle deregulation is common in human cancer, and alterations of <it>p27 </it>and <it>p21</it>, two critical cell cycle regulators, have been implicated in the development of many human malignancies. Therefore, we hypothesize that <it>p27 </it>T109G polymorphism individually or in combination with <it>p21 </it>(C98A and C70T) polymorphisms modifies risk of second primary malignancy (SPM) in patients with index squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (SCCHN).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cohort of 1,292 patients with index SCCHN was recruited between May 1995 and January 2007 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and followed for SPM occurrence. Patients were genotyped for the three polymorphisms. A log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare SPM-free survival and SPM risk.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that patients with <it>p27 </it>109 TG/GG, <it>p21 </it>98 CA/AA and <it>p21 </it>70 CT/TT variant genotypes had a worse SPM-free survival and an increased SPM risk than those with the corresponding <it>p27</it>109 TT, <it>p21 </it>98 CC, and <it>p21 </it>70 CC common genotypes, respectively. After combining the three polymorphisms, there was a trend for significantly increased SPM risk with increasing number of the variant genotypes (<it>P</it>trend = 0.0002). Moreover, patients with the variant genotypes had an approximately 2.4-fold significantly increased risk for SPM compared with those with no variant genotypes (HR, 2.4, 95% CI, 1.6-3.6).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that <it>p27 </it>T109G polymorphism individually or in combination with <it>p21 </it>(C98A and C70T) polymorphisms increases risk of SPM in patients with index SCCHN.</p
Accelerated Transport through Sliding Dynamics of Rodlike Particles in Macromolecular Networks
Transport of rodlike particles in macromolecular networks is critical for
many important biological processes and technological applications. Here, we
report that speeding-up dynamics occurs once the rod length L reaches around
integral multiple of the network mesh size ax. We find that such a fast
diffusion follows the sliding dynamics and demonstrate it to be anomalous yet
Brownian. The good agreement between theoretical analysis and simulations
corroborates that sliding dynamics is an intermediate regime between hopping
and Brownian dynamics, and suggests a mechanistic interpretation based on the
rod-length dependent entropic free energy barrier. These theoretical findings
are captured by the experimental observations of rods in synthetic networks,
and bring new insight into the physics of the transport dynamics in confined
media of networks
Quercetin Alleviates Pulmonary Fibrosis in Mice Exposed to Silica by Inhibiting Macrophage Senescence
Quercetin exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and other protective effects. Previous studies have shown that senescent cells, such as fibroblasts and type II airway epithelial cells, are strongly implicated in the development of pulmonary fibrosis pathology. However, the role of senescent macrophages during silicosis remains unclear. We investigated the effects of quercetin on macrophage senescence and pulmonary fibrosis, and explored underlying mechanisms. Mice were randomized to six model groups. Vitro model was also established by culturing RAW264.7 macrophages with silica (SiO2). We examined the effects of quercetin on fibrosis, senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) activity, and senescence-specific genes (p16, p21, and p53). We showed that quercetin reduced pulmonary fibrosis and inhibited extracellular matrix (ECM) formation. Quercetin also attenuated macrophage senescence induced by SiO2 both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, quercetin significantly decreased the expressions of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), including proinflammatory factors (interleukin-1α (Il-1α), Il-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP2, MMP9, and MMP12). In conclusion, quercetin mediated its anti-fibrotic effects by inhibiting macrophage senescence, possibly via SASP
BRD4 Inhibitor Inhibits Colorectal Cancer Growth and Metastasis
Post-translational modifications have been identified to be of great importance in cancers and lysine acetylation, which can attract the multifunctional transcription factor BRD4, has been identified as a potential therapeutic target. In this paper, we identify that BRD4 has an important role in colorectal cancer; and that its inhibition substantially wipes out tumor cells. Treatment with inhibitor MS417 potently affects cancer cells, although such effects were not always outright necrosis or apoptosis. We report that BRD4 inhibition also limits distal metastasis by regulating several key proteins in the progression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). This effect of BRD4 inhibitor is demonstrated via liver metastasis in animal model as well as migration and invasion experiments in vitro. Together, our results demonstrate a new application of BRD4 inhibitor that may be of clinical use by virtue of its ability to limit metastasis while also being tumorcidal
Local Extinction in the Bird Assemblage in the Greater Beijing Area from 1877 to 2006
Recent growth in industrialization and the modernization of agricultural activities, combined with human population growth, has greatly modified China’s natural environment, particularly in the vicinity of large cities. We compared avifauna checklists made between 1877 and 1938 with current checklists to determine the extent of local bird extinctions during the last century in the greater Beijing area. Our study shows that of the 411 bird species recorded from 1877–1938, 45 (10.9%) were no longer recorded from 2004–2006. Birds recorded as ‘rare’ in 1938 were more likely to have disappeared in subsequent years. Migrant status also influenced the probability of local bird extinction with winter migrants being the most affected class. Moreover, larger birds were more likely to have disappeared than smaller ones, potentially explained by differential ecological requirements and anthropogenic exploitation. Although our habitat descriptions and diet classification were not predictors of local bird extinction, the ecological processes driving local bird extinction are discussed in the light of historical changes that have impacted this region since the end of the 1930 s. Our results are of importance to the broader conservation of bird wildlife
Efficient Parameter Estimation for Sparse SAR Imaging Based on Complex Image and Azimuth-Range Decouple
Sparse signal processing theory has been applied to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. In compressive sensing (CS), the sparsity is usually considered as a known parameter. However, it is unknown practically. For many functions of CS, we need to know this parameter. Therefore, the estimation of sparsity is crucial for sparse SAR imaging. The sparsity is determined by the size of regularization parameter. Several methods have been presented for automatically estimating the regularization parameter, and have been applied to sparse SAR imaging. However, these methods are deduced based on an observation matrix, which will entail huge computational and memory costs. In this paper, to enhance the computational efficiency, an efficient adaptive parameter estimation method for sparse SAR imaging is proposed. The complex image-based sparse SAR imaging method only considers the threshold operation of the complex image, which can reduce the computational costs significantly. By utilizing this feature, the parameter is pre-estimated based on a complex image. In order to estimate the sparsity accurately, adaptive parameter estimation is then processed in the raw data domain, combining with the pre-estimated parameter and azimuth-range decouple operators. The proposed method can reduce the computational complexity from a quadratic square order to a linear logarithm order, which can be used in the large-scale scene. Simulated and Gaofen-3 SAR data processing results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method
